Update : 06 May 2013, 08:06 AM

European Union has stressed on implementing the action plan of tripartite partners and ILO for better working condition in Bangladesh, said foreign secretary Md Shahidul Haque.

EU ambassador to Bangladesh William Hanna during a visit to the foreign ministry on Sunday discussed about the government’s plan following the Rana Plaza collapse, he said.

Catherine Ashton, high representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Commissioner for Trade Karel de Gucht made a joint-statement on April 30 and expressed their grave concern over labour conditions in Bangladesh.

The tripartite partners, comprised of the government, employers and employees, announced a number of short and medium steps to improve the condition.

The EU would like Dhaka to stick to the policies to improve labour rights situation in Bangladesh, the foreign secretary added.

Ashton and Gucht in their statement said: “The European Union calls upon the Bangladeshi authorities to act immediately to ensure that factories across the country comply with international labour standards including International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions.”
