Update : 05 May 2013, 06:31 AM

A volunteer rescue worker, who sustained serious burn injuries while trying to salvage a trapped RMG worker from under the rubble of Rana Plaza on April 28, died at a Singapore hospital Saturday night.

Volunteer Mohammad Ejajuddin Ahmed Kaykobad, aged about 35, passed away at 12:45pm local time (10:45pm BST), Banglanews24 reported quoting the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of ninth infantry division of Bangladesh Army on Sunday.

After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited him at Combined Military Hospital on April 30, Kaykobad, a construction worker by profession, was flown to Singapore for better treatment.

On April 28, Ejaj along with nine other rescuer workers, including two army personnel and five firefighters, entered a makeshift tunnel inside the ruins of Rana Plaza to pull out Shahina, who was trapped on the third floor of the building.

Around 10pm on the day, a fire broke out from the sparks that originated from rod-cutting, while Ejaj was cutting a concrete beam with a power saw.

Ejaj was admitted to the burn unit of Combined Medical Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka with around 55% burn injuries.

After visiting him, Sheikh Hasina instructed the authorities concerned to send him to Singapore by an air ambulance for further treatment.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) had been bearing his treatment costs.
