Army to begin removing debris

Update : 28 Apr 2013, 06:25 AM

The army will begin a new operation to remove concrete debris from the site of the caved-in Rana Plaza anytime today, said the commanding officer of the army rescue unit.

“The operation will begin as soon as the nine people found to be trapped on the second floor are rescued,” General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General Chowdhury Hasan Suhrawardi of the 9th Infantry Division, which heads the rescue operation, told journalists in a morning press briefing.

The army would use heavy equipment and advanced technology used for removing debris and “have the logistic capacity to run this operation,” he said.

Addressing the concern that the operation may be wrapped up, he said they would continue their efforts until there are hopes of rescuing even a single person.

In the press brief, he also requested media personnel to cover the operation from safe places to facilitate its successful execution.

He also expressed gratitude to all individuals and organisations who volunteered for the rescue operation and made it possible to save such a large number of people.
