Local people including dignitaries, rights activists, teachers and students in Barisal yesterday urged the authorities concerned to arrest the killers of schoolboy Samir Rafi Inan.
They formed a human chain in front of the city’s Ashwini Kumar Hall to press home their demand. The Barisal units of Rotaract Club Midtown (RCM) and Youth Ending Hunger (YEH) jointly organised the event.
Samir Rafi Inan, 16, a class ten student of Barisal Government Zilla School, was allegedly killed by a band of youths on April 7 following an altercation over playing cricket the previous day.
Speakers at the programme alleged that none except one accused in the Inan murder case was arrested yet and that the investigation is “going too slowly”.
Inan’s father had lodged a case with the Barisal Kotwali police station on April 8, accusing seven youths including prime suspects Rifat and Rishad – both sons of a local Jatiya Party leader.
Locals later nabbed Sourav, one of the accused, on their own initiative and handed him over to police, but there were no further developments in this regard, speakers alleged.
They also alleged that the accused and their family members were putting pressure on the Inan family to withdraw the case and make compromises.
If immediate action is not taken to arrest and punish the killers, they would go for tougher movements, they said.
Sukhendu Edbor, president of RCM, Awlad Hossain Rakib, convener of YEH, freedom fighter Akkas Hossain, Professor Luthfe Alam, rights activist Dr. Syed Habibur Rahman, child rights expert Shuvangkar Chakroborty, and others were present on the occasion.
