Let's be honest: how many of you bothered with a webcam until the pandemic?
For years, basic webcams or built-in cameras got the job done, right? Well, maybe "done" is the bare minimum.
Webcams require careful consideration. Having used Logitech’s Brio 500 for two years, which served me quite well, my interest was piqued when Logitech released the MX Brio (part of their flagship MX series) last year.
After exploring this 4K webcam for over a month, I will use it today as a practical example to discuss the key factors you should consider for your purchase.
My aim is not to convince you of one model but to share insights from my experience and features that led me to buy the MX Brio.
Unboxing
Opening the MX Brio box, there is an immediate sense of a premium product, aligning with Logitech's 'MX' series reputation.
Despite its compact size, the webcam feels surprisingly heavy at 137g.
The main body, available in Graphite or Pale Gray (I bought the Graphite one), features a sleek design with high-quality materials that feel premium and solid.
The front lens assembly includes a physical privacy shutter, which you can twist to cover or open the lens.
Logitech has prioritized practical usability with the mounting system.
The MX Brio mount is super easy. It clips onto your monitor and has sticky pads to stay put. You can tilt it up or down.
Tilting down enables "Show Mode" to function almost like a basic document camera, letting you clearly show papers or objects on your desk—for demos or tutorials, especially with sharp 4K detail. The clip part cleverly attaches with a magnet.
Pull it off to find a standard tripod screw hole (1/4-inch) underneath, letting you easily mount the webcam on tripods or arms too.
Connectivity is handled by a high-quality, detachable 1.5m USB-C to USB-C cable (meeting USB 3.0 specifications for sufficient bandwidth).
The fact that the port on the webcam itself is standard USB-C is a significant plus, allowing for cable replacement or the use of different lengths if your setup requires it.
Setting up is a simple plug-and-play process for basic functionality. However, you will need to install Logitech's Options+/G-Hub d Logi Tune software to unlock its full potential.
The MX Brio offers wide compatibility and is certified for major platforms.

Their sticker on the product is required for warranty service.
Key considerations
Image Quality: When evaluating a webcam, image quality is arguably the most crucial factor. It determines how clear, sharp, and professional you look on screen, combining several factors:
Resolution refers to the number of pixels that make up the image; more pixels equate to greater detail. Typically, you will encounter three resolutions:
- 720p (HD): Once standard, now the bare minimum. Often looks noticeably soft or noisy.
- 1080p (Full HD): The current baseline for professional video calls and recordings. Offers a good balance of clarity and bandwidth requirements.
- 4K (Ultra HD): Typically, four times the pixel resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels). It means a whole lot more finer details, sharper lines, more realistic textures, and a more polished look. However, 4K requires more internet bandwidth and processing power.
Beyond resolution, the quality of the image sensor is critical. A larger, higher-quality sensor captures more light, resulting in a cleaner, less noisy image, especially in indoor lighting.
However, finding detailed sensor information is quite challenging in Bangladesh. Logitech is more transparent, noting the MX Brio uses an 8.5MP Sony STARVIS sensor, known for good low-light sensitivity.
A "4K" label means nothing without a good sensor. Consider the lens too. Higher-end webcams often use glass lenses, offering better sharpness and clarity compared to plastic lenses.
A good webcam reproduces colours accurately, influenced by the sensor, lens, and image processing software working together.
Let's be realistic—we deal with various lighting conditions in most of our home offices or workspaces.
A good webcam needs to handle these challenges gracefully. Look for webcams that automatically adjust exposure and color (auto light correction) to compensate for poor lighting, preventing you from looking like a shadow or washed out.
High Dynamic Range (HDR) delivers a punchier, higher contrast look, effective in low or uneven lighting.
It captures multiple exposures simultaneously, blending them to show detail in very bright and dark areas. Premium webcams incorporate sophisticated software like the MX Brio.
Logitech's RightLight 5 technology analyzes the scene and adjusts settings based on your face to optimize exposure and colour in tricky lighting.

Understanding webcam performance
Performance: While core image quality (resolution, sensor) is vital, other performance aspects significantly impact a webcam's usability and professionalism.
Frames Per Second (FPS) dictates how many individual images the webcam captures and displays each second, influencing video smoothness.
Thirty fps is standard for most video conferencing and online content, providing adequate fluidity for typical use.
Anything lower than this will make images appear to shake and vibrate. 60 fpss captures twice as many frames per second, resulting in smoother, fluid motion.
Beneficial for presentations, minimizing motion blur, or preferring a higher fidelity look. However, 60 fps requires more data bandwidth and processing power than 30 fps at the same resolution.
Webcams feature either fixed focus or autofocus. Fixed focus is simpler and cheaper, suitable if you remain consistently at the same distance from the webcam.
Moving closer or further can blur the image. Autofocus offers excellent flexibility. Good autofocus should be quick, accurate, and smooth, adjusting seamlessly without "hunting" (shifting rapidly in and out of focus).
This keeps your face sharp even if you naturally move during a call or presentation.
The MX Brio features an autofocus system and a manual focus option via software.
Field of View (FoV) determines how wide an angle the camera captures, measured in degrees.
- 65° to 78°: Narrower angles (near 65°) excel at isolating the subject for focused interactions. Wider angles (near 78°) provide a balanced frame that includes some context, versatile for video meetings to live streaming.
- 90°: A wider perspective accommodates multiple people or captures more workspace, useful for collaboration. Ultra-wide angles, like 120°, excel at framing larger groups or presenting entire whiteboards. Be aware that a very wide angle can introduce some edge distortion (objects appearing curved).
While a dedicated external microphone typically offers superior audio fidelity, the quality of a webcam's built-in microphones is crucial for convenience.
A high-fidelity microphone on a webcam with noise reduction/cancellation technology filters out ambient background noise, ensuring your voice remains prominent.
Premium webcams often utilize multiple microphones in arrays (like the MX Brio's dual beamforming, noise-reducing microphones) to better isolate your voice and suppress unwanted sounds.
Beyond the Basics: While core performance is crucial, other features impact a webcam's usability, security, and flexibility.
Many modern webcams feature a built-in privacy cover that you can slide over the lens when the camera is not in use.
This physical barrier provides an extra layer of security by ensuring that no one can see through the camera, even if left on or activated by malicious software.
The connection type determines data transfer speed and setup ease. High-resolution video at high frame rates (like 4K/30 or 1080p/60) requires significant bandwidth. A USB 3.0 (or higher) connection is necessary for reliable data handling.
USB-C is becoming standard for its versatility. Ensure compatibility with your computer's ports. A detachable cable is useful for replacement or custom lengths.
The mounting versatility of your webcam significantly affects your framing and the overall quality of your video presence.
Most webcams have a clip to attach to a monitor or laptop screen. A versatile mount with a standard tripod thread (1/4-inch) allows flexible positioning, crucial for optimal angles.
A webcam needs to work reliably with your existing setup. Verify compatibility with your primary video conferencing platforms (e.g., Teams, Zoom, WebEx, Skype, FaceTime, Google Meet). Certifications for these platforms indicate optimized performance and integration. Additionally, ensure support for your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux).
Modern webcams increasingly leverage AI for subtle but useful image improvements beyond core processing features like face-based image enhancement (video noise reduction), auto-framing (digital pans and zooms), and background blur/replacement (though video conferencing platforms now offer similar features natively).
Choosing it right
Selecting the ideal webcam means matching capabilities to your specific needs, not just chasing specs. First, define your primary use, desired image quality, technical setup, and valuable features like versatile mounting.
Next, balance these needs with your budget. Premium webcams offer better performance, but real value comes from meeting your requirements. Sometimes, a mid-range option might provide the best balance.
Ultimately, the best webcam isn't one-size-fits-all; it is the one that meets your needs and represents a smart investment for you.
