Radio Jyoti, Bangladesh's first catholic online radio channel, marked its first anniversary recently after it was founded in June 2016 by the Diocese of Rajshahi.
Officials affiliated with the Bogra-based online radio channel commented on the occasion that they were extremely happy with the following generated in the first year, especially among younger listeners.
"Our primary aim was to connect with young people who use smartphones, to keep them informed about Christianity, church teachings and religious news as well as nationally important news and events," said Father Sunil Daniel Rozario, programme director of Radio Jyoti.
"We also wanted to produce a group of media workers that the Christian community lacks today," the priest added.
Father Rozario further said that he was particularly heartened by the growing enthusiasm from younger listeners, with 21,000 hits on their website in the last month showing a rising trend. The largest contingent of their listeners were Bangladeshis in the USA.
The program director also expressed his wish to expand the channel in line with the increasing demand. Currently, Radio Jyoti employs two full-time staff members as well as 12 part-timers.
