These are the androids you’re looking for

We’ve seen plenty of major studios and companies shell out millions in marketing for people to enter theatres in hoards. This time around, with the upcoming release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Japanese mobile carrier SoftBank is launching a pair of smartphones to celebrate the first standalone spin-off from the Star Wars franchise. The phones themselves are made by Sharp, and come in both Dark Side Edition and Light Side Edition.

The given

The specs themselves aren’t that impressive, mainly because it’s all about the Star Wars theme that die-hard fans might want to grab for. As listed, each Dark and Light models are 5.3-inch, 1080p IGZO displayed phones. They have a Snapdragon 820 processor, 22.6-megapixel rear camera, 3,000mAh battery, TV tuner, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (with microSD slot) and are 7.4mm thick at 155g. Apart from the camera, all the others are average by Android market standards.

The gimmicks

Here are, of course, the features the fans might geek out about that are customised for these specific phones. For one, there are ‘Live wallpapers’ that make the phone look like an X-Wing or TIE fighter cockpit. There’s the Android 6.0 skin in both dark and light themes, five exclusive metal figurines taken from Rogue One, a Star Wars Movie Player app that lets you watch The Force Awakens until the year 2020. No kidding. In addition, there is a pre-loaded Star Wars: Force Collection card game with a code for a gold card pack ticket. And then the obvious, Star Wars themed alarm clock app, emojis and ringtones.

A cross between an iPhone and subtle hints of Sony Xperias of the past, the Star Wars phones are your average Android handsets with a spruced up cinematic theme. Even for a huge Star Wars fan, this might be something to smirk at, giggle a little and mosey on by. It’s cute, and if you’re looking for a mid-range phone, and you happen to be a Star Wars fan, knock your socks off.
