You do not need a large garden to grow fresh herbs at home. A few pots placed near a kitchen window, balcony, or another sunny spot can be enough to grow several useful varieties.

Besides adding flavor and aroma to food, many herbs contain antioxidants and other plant compounds that can contribute to a healthy diet. With regular care, you can simply pick fresh leaves whenever needed.

1. Rosemary

Rosemary is a fragrant herb widely used in cooking. It contains antioxidants such as rosmarinic acid, which may help protect cells from oxidative stress.

Rosemary does not like excessive water, so make sure the pot has proper drainage. It grows best with plenty of sunlight.

Fresh rosemary leaves can be used with meat, grilled or roasted vegetables, and baked dishes.

2. Basil

Basil is a popular herb that is relatively easy to grow at home. It contains antioxidant compounds such as eugenol, which may help protect the body from oxidative stress.

Basil can be grown from seeds or cuttings. It needs plenty of sunlight, while the soil should be watered when it begins to dry out.

Fresh basil can be added to salads, drinks, and various dishes. Keep in mind that different varieties of basil are not necessarily the same as the tulsi commonly grown in Bangladesh, so identify the variety before planting.

3. Thyme

Thyme contains thymol and flavonoids, compounds known for their antioxidant properties. It is also commonly associated with supporting overall respiratory and immune health.

One advantage of thyme is that it requires relatively little care. It does not need frequent watering and can grow well in a pot with adequate sunlight.

Use fresh thyme in soups, stews, meat marinades, and other dishes.

4. Mint

Mint is one of the most familiar herbs in Bangladeshi kitchens. It contains menthol and other plant compounds and is commonly used to add a refreshing flavor to food and drinks.

Mint is relatively easy to grow and can thrive even in a small pot. However, it spreads quickly, so growing it in a separate container is a good idea.

Mint leaves can be used in tea, lemonade, salads, chutneys, fuchka sauces, and various dishes.

5. Oregano

Oregano is particularly popular in pizza and pasta dishes. It contains antioxidant compounds such as carvacrol.

The herb generally grows well in sunny and relatively dry conditions. When growing oregano in a pot, place it somewhere that receives plenty of sunlight.

It can be used in pizza, pasta, pasta sauces, meat dishes, and other Italian or Mediterranean-style meals.

6. Parsley

Parsley contains compounds such as apigenin and luteolin, as well as vitamin C. These nutrients and plant compounds have antioxidant properties and may contribute to overall health.

Unlike some other herbs, parsley can also be grown indoors if it receives moderate sunlight.

Fresh parsley can be added to soups, salads, and smoothies or used as a garnish for various dishes.

7. Sage

Sage contains polyphenols, which are known for their antioxidant properties. These compounds may help protect the body from oxidative stress.

Sage needs plenty of sunlight but does not require excessive watering. It can be grown in a pot on a balcony or beside a sunny window.

Its leaves have a distinctive earthy aroma and rich flavor and can be used in meat dishes, soups, and other savory foods.

What to Know Before Growing Herbs at Home

Bangladesh's warm and humid climate means that not every herb will grow in exactly the same way. Before buying a plant, check its requirements for sunlight, watering, and soil.

When growing herbs in pots:

  • Make sure the pot has drainage holes.
  • Do not allow excess water to accumulate.
  • Provide enough sunlight according to the plant's needs.
  • Wash leaves thoroughly before using them in food.
  • If pesticides are used, make sure they are safe for edible plants.
  • Regular pruning can help some herbs grow more densely.

Overall, these herbs can be a nutritious addition to a varied and balanced diet. However, no herb should be considered a substitute for medical treatment. Use them in moderation as part of a diverse diet rather than relying on them to prevent or treat disease.
