Walking past roadside eateries, it is hard to miss the large pots of biryani draped in bright red cloth. For many food lovers, the sight is almost as tempting as the aroma coming from the pot.

But have you ever wondered why red cloth, of all colors, is used to cover biryani pots?

There are several theories behind the tradition, with one tracing it back to the Mughal era.

According to a popular historical account, Mughal emperor Humayun once sought refuge in Iran, where food was reportedly served to him in silver vessels. The serving trays were covered with red cloth.

Some believe this practice eventually influenced the tradition of covering biryani pots with red cloth.

While the historical link is difficult to establish with certainty, the association has remained part of the popular story surrounding biryani culture in South Asia.
