Is there a fabric that keeps on giving the way denim does? Hardy, comfortable, stylish and versatile, whether we’re talking about your favourite skinnies, or those fancy bootcuts, or even those oh-so grungy boyfriend jeans, nothing says cool like a pair of blues. Here’s how you love your denim back.
Too much, too soon
Denim is designed to weather the elements, so don’t be too enthusiastic about washing your jeans, and this is particularly true for new jeans, which come pre-washed anyway (unless you’re buying from Doja). They conform to your body, so washing ruins the shape. Given how dirty our city is, you can still get in about foru to five wears out of them before you chuck them in the laundry. Serious denim fanatics will maintain that raw or stiff jeans should not be washed within the first six months of purchase, but we’ll leave that to your judgement.
Play it cool
When you do wash them blues (or even coloured jeans), it’s best to use cold water, as hot water can fade out the colours faster. Ignore this rule if you’re actually looking for faded jeans.
Not too funky
So you go for a while between washes. How do you prevent your jeans from getting stinky too fast? Hang them up to air out when you’re not wearing them, and hang them in the bathroom before you step into the shower. The steam will take care of the stale smell.
Let it breathe
Denim fibres need to breathe, so don’t cram your jeans too tight in your closet, or squeeze them together if you’re putting them in storage. Whether you fold'em or hang'em, give them some space, and they’ll retain their shape, and stay fresh longer.
Neck to neck
This is a great tip for ladies shopping at Doja, or braving the Eid shopping season where changing rooms are hard to come by. How do you know that those skinnies will fit? Place the waistline of the jeans around the diameter of your neck. If the waistline of the pant comfortably meets the back of your neck, you can safely buy them.
