This simple habit can end your child’s endless demands

Children struggle to explain big feelings. Listening calmly and setting steady limits teaches self-control gradually

Update : 25 Oct 2026, 03:25 PM

Tantrums are rarely just misbehavior. Understanding what lies behind them is the first step to handling them well.

Children often cannot express their wants and feelings properly. When they don’t get something, they cry or dig in their heels. The same behavior can also stem from a bid for parents’ attention or from tiredness, hunger, or lack of sleep. Before trying to manage a child’s tantrums, parents should therefore try to understand the cause. Follow a few simple principles, and you will find that needless demands fall away considerably.

Stay calm and be patient

When a child is being stubborn, don’t silence them with scolding or shouting. That can make matters worse. Listen calmly instead, and try to understand why they are behaving this way.

Children calm down faster when someone listens to them. Over time, they start using words for big feelings instead of tears.

Don’t give in to every demand

Don’t grant every request just to stop a child from crying. This can give them the idea that being stubborn gets them what they want. Explain in simple language what is necessary and what is not.

Once you have said no to something, don’t change your decision, however much the child cries.

Give your child enough time

Children often make demands to win their parents’ attention. Set aside some time each day to play with your child, talk with them, and join in the activities they enjoy. During this time, keep your phone away and give them your full attention. This supports their emotional development and strengthens your bond with them. On weekends, you could also take your child out somewhere.

Encourage good behavior

When a child calmly expresses a need instead of being stubborn, praise them. Encourage and reward even small good deeds. This helps them see that speaking calmly and being patient are good behavior, and they will cut down needless demands by themselves.

Combine rules with love

Create age-appropriate rules for situations such as shopping, outings, visits to relatives, and playtime, and build the habit of following them. Encourage other family members to take part in observing these rules too.

However, never resort to hitting, humiliating, or frightening a child in the name of discipline. Teach the right behavior through love and empathy.

Limit screen time

Excessive use of mobile phones or television can also make children stubborn. Set screen limits according to age, and encourage creative activities such as sports, drawing, and reading storybooks.

The bottom line

When dealing with a child’s tantrums, hitting, shouting, and scare tactics have no place. Patience, empathy, and consistent behavior matter most. Parents should understand the reason behind each of their child’s actions and give appropriate guidance when needed.

The goal is not to crush a child’s stubbornness. A parent’s main responsibility is to teach the child to control their emotions and strike a balance between what they want and what they can have.
