Last Thursday, as I was watching the Apple September event, the exact moment Tim Cook stepped aside and moved John Ternus toward center stage —"no no no, not me, that's your guy, that's your opener”—felt less like a casual baton pass and more like a gravitational pivot the industry had been waiting for.
The engineer who built Apple's silicon transition from the inside became its CEO at the exact moment Apple shipped its most coherent product generation in a decade: the M6 Mac Mini, the M5 MacBooks, M5 Max, M5 Ultra, and the A20 Pro iPhone.
Same commitment, across every device Apple makes, simultaneously. This is more than a product refresh cycle.
Apple does not believe the future of AI lives in a data centre.
It believes the future of AI lives in your hand, on your lap or your desk — running locally, privately, without a server, without your data leaving your device.
Apple spent the past four years building the best inference machine that you and I, the general population, can actually buy.
Ternus made that philosophy explicit from his very first keynote: the iPhone is no longer just a smartphone; it is an intelligent personal hub you start your day with.
The iPhone 18 Pro is the first product built explicitly around that philosophy. Everything Apple did inside this device is the engineering consequence of that single bet.
Welcome to Ramgageddon
At a glance, the 18 Pro and Pro Max look very similar to last year’s 17 Pros.
You still get the aluminium unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, but they are now all color-matched instead of two-tone.
This year you can enjoy the new flagship Burgundy color, alongside Glacier, Silver, and finally, matte Black.
However, the first major upgrade for the Pros is the price. Given the hyper memory inflation we have seen across the entire Apple product line—driven by the massive RAM inflation for AI—both models are now up by $100.
The 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, with a new 2TB storage option.
That stings less than what Apple quietly did to the models it did not update. The iPhone Air moves to $1,099, base 17 to $899, and the 17e to $699. There was no iPhone 18.
Today, we are here for the Pros.
A20 Pro: The desktop class architecture
After three years of 3nm chips, the A20 Pro is Apple's first smartphone chip built on cutting-edge 2-nanometer technology.
The CPU holds the same 6-core arrangement as the A19 Pro: two super cores running 20% faster than their predecessors, and four efficiency cores, all integrated with neural accelerators for low-latency, on-device AI.
But the GPU moves to a 7-core design, accommodating up to 40% performance increase driven by expanded internal bandwidth and a new generation of neural accelerators with 2x faster 8-bit floating-point math.
But neither the CPU nor the GPU is where the real change happened.
The Neural Engine is. Apple doubled it. The A20 Pro features a dual 16-core Neural Engine just like the newly introduced M6 Mac Mini, delivering twice the AI compute of the A19 Pro.
For context, the 32 Neural Engine cores were previously reserved for the Mac Ultra.
Apple has pulled that architecture into a phone.
Feeding all of it results in a 50% increase in memory bandwidth— the widest memory interface Apple has ever shipped in an iPhone.
Raw core counts are just ideas without the bandwidth to keep them going when you need them.
Packing this much compute into a smartphone chassis created a thermal constraint that a conventional vapor chamber could not resolve.
Apple resolved it at the silicon packaging level.
The A20 Pro introduces custom chip packaging directly inspired by the M-series packaging, with the silicon die now sitting side-by-side with memory rather than stacked beneath it.
This single repositioning removes the memory from the thermal path of the SoC.
The chip sits flush against the vapor chamber. What previously acted as insulation is now out of the way entirely.
The vapor chamber itself was rebuilt from scratch. It carries three times the surface area compared to the 17 Pro's, cycling deionized water continuously across a structure made from 80% recycled stainless steel.
A larger graphite plate handles the remaining thermal load. The critical addition is nanotwin copper, an industry-first material that moves heat specifically away from the display while maintaining structural strength.
The combined result is a 40% improvement in not just peak benchmark numbers, but sustained performance over the 17 Pro, and a 2x improvement over the 16 Pro.
The logic board was also redesigned entirely to fit a larger battery.
The result is visible in the most honest metric available: weight.
The iPhone 18 Pros are the heaviest Pro Apple has ever shipped.
Variable aperture: Hardware, finally
The camera is arguably the most important part of the iPhone experience, and with the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple introduced its biggest upgrade in years: a true Variable Aperture.
Aperture controls how much light enters the sensor and dictates depth of field.
On every previous iPhone, you had only two ways of controlling the light: ISO and shutter speed.
A fixed aperture, like the f/1.78, was the constraint you worked around. Cranking ISO to handle low light caused graininess because you were amplifying sensor sensitivity without controlling the incoming light itself. The physics were always working against you.
The new 48MP Fusion main camera removes that constraint.
Apple has created a system of six laser-cut polymer blades, each thinner than a human hair, all controlled by a custom rotor mechanism. This rotor can mechanically adjust the aperture between four specific positions: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0.
If you open it up to f/1.48 or f/1.8, you are letting in 50% more light, which is perfect for low-light and astrophotography.
But if you stop it down to f/4.0, you can really make sure the entire scene is in focus.
For the average person, this means no more blurry faces in the back row of group dinner shots, and no more grainy, unusable night photos.
This is the first time you actually have control over depth of field at a hardware level.
The frictionless ecosystem
The N1 networking chip is a transition management story. Real-world throughput lives in the seams—the exact moment your phone shifts from Wi-Fi 7 to cellular or routes a call across two simultaneous connections without dropping a word.
The N1 is engineered specifically to make those handoffs completely invisible.
Pair that with Apple’s in-house C2 modem packaged alongside the A20 Pro—guaranteeing a noticeable bump to internet speeds and reliability even when you are stuck in traditional dead zones, and the hardware finally catches up to how we actually live and work on the move.
Additionally, iPhone Handoff routes a single phone number transparently across two iPhones to whichever iPhone you pick up via invisible, modem-level carrier negotiation.
If you carry a work phone and a personal phone, this feature alone will fundamentally change how you navigate your day.
Apple also managed to fit part of Face ID under the display, allowing the Dynamic Island to shrink 35% compared to the 17 Pro. It is now far more useful, capable of displaying three live activities at a glance. A small change that compounds in usefulness when the device is routing this much information at once.
Another key improvement is the battery life. The iPhone 18 Pro carries a 4,056 mAh cell, delivering 36 hours of video playback compared to 33 hours on the 17 Pro.
The Pro Max is the more dramatic story — 5,391 mAh, 45 hours of video playback.
That is at least 6 hours more than the 17 Pro Max, driven by a significantly larger battery cell alongside the chip’s efficiency improvements.
On eSIM-only models, the numbers are even bigger: 4,288 and 5,567 mAh. If endurance is your primary concern, the Max has never made a stronger case for itself.
The charging architecture now matches the power draw: 50% charge in 15 minutes, roughly 20% faster than the previous generation.
Just five minutes of wired charging delivers approximately 6 hours of video playback.
For a device running sustained workloads across a full day, that is more than a convenience feature.
The intelligence layer
The 32-core Neural Engine is not a Siri feature. Siri is a Neural Engine feature. The chip came first.
Every improvement in Siri AI — on-device personal context across apps, real-time action inside 300,000 third-party applications, expressive voices — exists only because Apple built the hardware to run it locally, without a server, without latency, without your data leaving the device. That is the architecture. Siri is what sits on top of it.
One precision matters here. Apple's on-device models are excellent at what they do. Frontier AI capabilities — GPT-4 class reasoning, complex multi-step analysis — still run in data centres regardless of what device you hold.
The 32-core Neural Engine does not change that ceiling.
What it changes is the floor: the baseline of what this device can do privately, instantly, and without a network connection. That is the bet Apple is making.
Together with state-of-the-art hardware, a handful of incredibly handy software-level improvements have arrived.
Pro controls make the manual capabilities accessible without requiring a third-party app: aperture selection between four positions, shutter speed, white balance, and a histogram for exposure monitoring, all built into the native camera interface.
Photographic Styles received an upgrade. Apple added texture and grain control, allowing you to fine-tune the interplay between light and shadow or adjust skin texture to elevate the emotion of a scene.
You can balance color and texture simultaneously, and crucially, reverse or change these edits at any time.
The 18 Pro brings a much-needed double-tap tracking feature that keeps your focus on any subject, no matter where they move around in the frame.
Plus, it comes with stunning 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapses and Cinematic mode effects that you can add to your regular videos after you have captured them—now with 60 frames per second for smooth half-speed playback.
This transforms the device into an uncompromising mobile camera rig.
AudioMix receives a meaningful update too: music now joins voice as a supported input type.
For field production, this eliminates the binary choice between capturing your subject’s voice or the acoustic environment surrounding them.
Combined with ProRes Log recording and Smart Focus Tracking, the 18 Pro now becomes a true camera-to-edit solution for run-and-gun production.
This is exactly why Samsung has not quite won over the “Shot on iPhone” crowd.
Finally, “Image Authenticity” is where Apple makes its most consequential long-term statement.
Apple goes beyond fallible watermarks. Supporting the SynthID standard to identify AI-generated images is the industry baseline, but Apple is going a step further with the “Apple Reference Image.”
Now you can mathematically prove the authenticity of a photo taken on an iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple Reference Image starts in the most secure way possible: with the sensor.
The new main sensor securely and digitally signs photo metadata at the pixel level the exact moment of capture.
Private Cloud Compute develops that signed data into an unalterable image in the Photos app that acts as a digital negative to visually confirm what was actually in the shot.
This reference photo lives alongside the regular editable photo for flexibility, setting a standard that should become a universal standard for every camera on Earth.
Verdict
What does it signal about the industry?
The spec war — thinner, lighter, brighter, marginally better camera benchmarks — is structurally over. Apple has now replaced it with a different competition entirely: sustained compute density.
For the past two years, the tech industry settled into a comfortable consensus: Apple was losing the AI race.
OpenAI rewrote what an assistant could do. Google embedded Gemini across its entire product suite. Meta open-sourced its models and dared everyone to keep up.
Apple, meanwhile, partnered with OpenAI and now Google. The industry read that as surrender.
They are wrong.
