The Art of Organisation: Tips to effectively organise your house

Presenting to you 5 tips to clean and revamp your living quarters

Update : 10 Jul 2024, 01:06 PM

It can be pretty daunting to have a whole “not so tidy” house to clean all by yourself especially if you have not dealt with it in a long time but the process and end results are equally cathartic.

An organised home can be conducive to productive ideas and positive thoughts underscoring healthy family relationships as well.

Decluttering effectively

Decluttering is like clearing a path before embarking on a journey; you can't move forward effectively until you've removed the obstacles in your way.

Decluttering your rooms can be done in 2 simple steps:

  1. Start by tackling one area at a time, sorting items into keep, donate, and discard piles.
  2. Maintain momentum by setting a timer for focused decluttering sessions to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Design and use storage areas

While this part may be different for everyone given that the size of their houses may vary but rest assured, the method is just the same. Designating storage areas involves categorising items based on their use and frequency.

Assign and invest in specific cabinets, shelves or storage containers for categories like kids’ toys, office supplies, or miscellaneous items, and label them for easy access and clarity.

Get Everyone Involved

This is where we often go wrong. In Bangladesh, it is seen that usually, the leading women of the house are organising areas of the house without any assistance. It is important to bring everyone residing in the house on board.

This not only engages involvement but also ensures maintaining the tidiness of the house, making the process interactive and quicker.

Tackling the kitchen

Brace yourselves for the most time-consuming part of the house to deal with but the following ways are sure to make it a piece of cake.

Start by decluttering shelves and cabinets, removing expired items and grouping similar items like spices and canned goods in bins or baskets. Maximise storage with shelves and labelled containers.

Use clear containers or jars for dry goods and arrange items by frequency of use to keep daily essentials accessible. Optimise workspace by hanging pots, pans, and utensils on hooks or racks.

Decorate with functionality

A well decorated house speaks volume about your taste so don’t hesitate from going an extra mile to make it look good with hidden storage. Go for a bench with storage at the base and top it off with some newly upholstered cushions.

Utilise wall-mounted shelves and coffee tables with built-in drawers. Choose decorative items that also serve a practical purpose, like decorative trays for organising essentials or decorative mirrors that double as storage cabinets.

It is to be noted that organising is not a one-time task but an ongoing process. Consistency and regular maintenance are key to keeping your home organised and clutter-free.
