E-books versus paperback: Embracing the change or following the tradition?

The current worth of the global e-book market is $15 billion!

Update : 03 Jul 2024, 12:57 PM

Coming from a book enthusiast, reading a book is less of an activity and more of a retreat into a serene sanctuary. While Cinderella or Snow White were likely among my first books (as they are for most children), my true introduction to a literary masterpiece came much later, at the age of nine, when I read Matilda by Roald Dahl.

But, nowadays with the introduction of electronic books, the experience of reading has evolved tenfold but it raises the question of whether or not, it alters the experience of reading a book.

Legacy of paper books

Holding a paper book and physically turning its pages can be a soothing and satisfying experience. The tactile sensation of interacting with a book can create a sense of connection to the story and the act of reading itself.

Printed books provide a necessary reprieve from the long screen time that saturates our daily routines.

Amidst the deluge of information on digital screens, engaging with a physical book offers a calming escape. It allows our eyes and minds to relax, offering respite from the strain of screen glare and providing uninterrupted immersion in the text, free from the disruptions of notifications and pop-ups.

According to a report of Statista in 2023, despite the notable rise of e-books, in 2021, print book sales in the United States alone exceeded 650 million units, underscoring their enduring popularity.

Sustainably sourced paper and responsible printing practices can mitigate the ecological footprint of paper books, appealing to environmentally conscious readers as they can make an impact towards a sustainable planet.

Global appeal of Ebooks

For someone similar to myself who can't even choose what to wear to a lunch, deciding which book to buy has never been less of a task so e-books allow me to download my preferred books, taking my own sweet time. That too, without spending a dime or worrying about missing the book return deadline. Plus, their portability augments the advantages offered by e-books, which makes them the new fad.

The rise of self-publishing platforms has led to a surge in the number of new books being independently published each year. Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), Smashwords, and others have democratized the publishing process, allowing authors to publish their work without traditional publishing gatekeepers.

According to recent data, the global book market was valued at approximately $15.7 billion in 2020 and is projected to grow significantly in the coming years, as reported by Statista in 2023. This reiterates the skyrocketing acceptance and usage of e-books around the globe.

E-books also bring in an array of features like the option of adjusting font size, calibrating the brightness and even annotating on the pages.

Verdict

As I remain an old-school at heart, I would be accepting of the change but will always hold the tradition closer to my heart. While e-books may provide us with ephemeral comfort and features, paperbacks have proved to be better for our health and for the environment. Besides, physical books do not require batteries or charging, ensuring uninterrupted reading sessions.

The timeless tradition of reading printed volumes will persist, ensuring future generations experience the enchantment of turning physical pages.
