Pineapples on pizza: A crime or the perfect topping?

In the famous words of Gordan Ramsay, ‘You don’t put pineapple on pizza’

For International Pineapple Day on Thursday, what is the better way to celebrate it—indulging in a slice of Hawaiian pizza or continuing to hate it in theory?

Pizza is one of those salty delicacies that holds a special place in almost everyone’s hearts. From pepperoni, mushroom, sausage, bacon and meat to onions, cheese and black olives, we all have our own choice of toppings we enjoy.

However, the topping that has managed to create rifts between entire families and communities is none other than pineapple.

While many people may crave a sweet and salty combination or enjoy the zing that pineapples add to a pizza, some believe that fruits do not belong on pizza, period.

Pineapple on pizza, formally known as Hawaiian pizza, was invented by a Greek immigrant in Canada way back in 1954 at his very own restaurant.

In an interview with the BBC, the restaurant owner said he had been simply experimenting with toppings for fun and liked the contrast of sweet and savoury flavours it brought about.

Thus, this infamous combination was born.

Hawaiian pizza can be found in almost every pizza joint in Bangladesh such as Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Pizza Inn, Cheez, etc. While some may think that the addition of this fruit uplifts the flavour of the pizza, it is a fact that this addition makes the crust soggy. The texture is also ruined.

It is no secret that Italians, who are considered the pioneers of pizza, succumb to rage at the mention of pineapples. Hence never make the mistake of asking for this topping when you visit your favourite Italian city.

Safe to say, pineapples simply do not belong on pizza. It is the most controversial combination known to date. Even if you have a sweet tooth and you are craving the sweetness that pineapples add to a pizza, you should treat yourself to something that is actually a dessert.
