Prof Kamrul Islam, the top leading urologist of Bangladesh, set a milestone by transplanting 1,001 kidneys in Bangladesh recently.

Founder of Center for Kidney Diseases and Urology at Shyamoli and a son of a martyr of 1971 Liberation War, Kamrul started successfully transplanting kidneys at the National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology (NIKDU) in 2007.

After joining the government service through the 11th BCS, Prof Kamrul later resigned from the government service in 2011 to set up Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology at Shyamoli to offer treatment to poor and mid-income patients.

He with his team transplanted a kidney for Tk210,000. The same transplants cost Tk10,00,000 to Tk15,00,000 at hospitals in Bangladesh and over Tk20,00,000 in neighbouring India.

His father Aminul Islam, an agronomist of Pakshey Sugarcane Research Institute, was killed by Pakistani collaborators with Biharis in 1971 Liberation War.

He offers treatment to hundreds of kidney patients at nominal cost.
