Closure of educational institutions extended for two weeks

The ministry will take further decisions after observing the overall development, says Dipu Moni

The government on Wednesday extended the closure of secondary and higher secondary-level educational institutions by two weeks until February 20, taking into consideration the worsening Covid-19 situation in the country.

"The National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Covid-19 has advised keeping educational institutions closed for a few more days,"  Education Minister Dipu Moni said.

The ministry will take further decisions after observing the overall development, she added.

Earlier on January 21, the Cabinet Division said schools, colleges and equivalent educational institutions will remain closed until February 6.

Universities will take similar measures, it said, before stipulating some new restrictions. Carrying vaccination certificates has been made mandatory while traveling by bus or attending any gatherings.

Bangladesh reported 36 more Covid-19 deaths and 12,193 new cases in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning. 

The positivity rate was recorded at 27.43% during the same period after testing 44,451 samples across the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On Tuesday, Bangladesh registered 13,158 new Covid-19 cases and 31 deaths.

The latest infections were registered after testing 45,031 samples, yielding a positivity rate of 29.17%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
