Several bus counters are charging passengers three times more than the normal fare for their Eid journeys.

Abdus Salam, who got on a Binimoy Poribahan bus bound for his hometown Tangail, said that he waited for three hours for a bus before giving in to the exorbitant fares.

“In order to go to Elenga from Dhaka’s Abdullahpur, I’ve had to pay Tk400. Whereas the fare is only Tk150,” he said.

He added from Elenga he would have to go to Bhuapur for which he would have to pay an additional fare.

He said that he had to pay Tk800 for two tickets and added: “There is no end to our sufferings.”

Meanwhile, Shah Alam, who is a private car driver in Dhaka said that he had to pay Tk350 to go to Elenga as opposed to Tk200.

Ataur Rahman, in-charge of Elenga Highway Police outpost, on the matter said that police were ready to take action against anyone charging  extra fare.

Passengers were seen waiting for buses since early Saturday morning.

They complained of having to pay high prices for the tickets as well.
