Comilla-7 constituency lawmaker and former deputy speaker Ali Ashraf passed away at a Dhaka hospital at the age of 73 on Friday.
Doctors declared him dead at around 4pm, the MP’s private secretary, Abdul Quddus Hawlader, said.
The Awami League politician had been suffering from old-age complications as well as diabetes for some time, Hawlader stated.
He was admitted to Square Hospital on July 10 for a gallbladder infection. He was shifted to the ICU on July 13 as his condition worsened after catching pneumonia. He was later put on life support on July 21.
Ali Ashraf was elected member of parliament five times from Comilla-7 constituency. He was elected deputy speaker in 2001.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several ministers offered condolences to the late MP’s grieving family.
