Abdus Shahid, joint chief news editor of private television channel NTV, died at a city hospital on Sunday after a long battle with Covid-19. He was 63.
Shahid breathed his last around 10:45am while undergoing treatment for coronavirus infections at Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Hospital in Dhaka, said Kader Gani Chowdhury, president of a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ).
The journalist was admitted to Kuwait Moitree Hospital on July 27 with a breathing problem, two days after he tested positive for Covid-19.
Later, he was shifted to Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Hospital’s ICU as his condition deteriorated.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
He will be buried at his family graveyard in Lakshmipur’s Kamalnagar upazila.
Shahid took up journalism as his career in the 80s and has worked for different newspapers and televisions channels, including Dainik Dinkal, Islamic Television, and NTV.
He was also a former president of a faction of DUJ and former joint secretary general of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ).
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock at his death.
In a condolence message, he said Shahid, as a journalist, was active against social degradation and injustice.
He prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed his profound sympathy to the bereaved family members.
