Language Movement veteran Professor Laila Nur passes away

She died around 9:15am at the CD Path Hospital, after suffering from heart disease

Professor Laila Nur—a 1952 Language Movement veteran and academic— has died in a Comilla hospital. 

She died around 9:15am  on Friday at the CD Path Hospital, after suffering from heart disease, according to her grandson Golam Jilani. 

She had been admitted there on May 28. 

In 1955, Nur was arrested and jailed for 21 days for her participation in the Language Movement of 1952. She was then a student of the English Department of Dhaka University. She joined Comilla Victoria Government College in 1957 as its first female professor and then retired from her service in 1992.

Laila Nur will be buried after Asar prayer at the Gazibari Graveyard in Dharmapur Purbapara Jaame Mosque of Comilla on Friday.

Her students and well-wishers rushed to the hospital at the news of her demise.

Laila Nur was born on October 5, 1934 in Daudkandi Thana of Comilla. 

In 2014, Nur received the Binoy Sommanona Award for her contribution to the Language Movement and education.
