2 initiatives of BNNRC get 2019 UN WSIS Prizes

The wins have boosted the recognition of BNNRC's community radio projects globally

Two initiatives of the Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) have garnered 2019 UN World Summit on the Information Society (UN WSIS) Prizes.

BNNRC Chairperson Rezaul Karim Chowdhury received the champion certificate for the community radio-related projects on Tuesday.

Houlin Zhao, secretary general of UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU), handed over the certificate.

ITU announced 90 champions of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes contest held in Geneva, Switzerland. Of them, 18 were declared winners.  

The champion's projects are: Climate Justice and Resilience through Community Radio in Coastal Areas of the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh, and Creating Awareness on Right to Information (RTI) through Community Radio.

The project on climate justice was supported by the COAST Trust while the other was supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF).

Earlier, BNNRC got the WSIS Award, in 2016, as a winner and as a champion in 2017. 

WSIS Prizes has been recognizing remarkable efforts made by entities and organizations from around the globe that focus on accelerating the socio-economic progress of the whole world as a community. 

The contest was held for the first time in 2012, and rapidly gained attention and popularity within the ICT for Development (ICT4D) community.
