Young director Maksud Hossain inspired thousands by winning the Student Academy Awards with his short documentary, “Three Beauties,” in 2016. Now, after a long “commercial break,” he is back with his short film “Remakri,” which is competing in the 25th International Short Film Week in Regensburg, Germany.

This will be the world premiere of “Remakri,” which was completed at the end of last year. Shot in Bandarban, the film stars Fazlur Rahman Babu, Mahmudul Islam Mithu, Rashida Rakhi, and child star, Shariful Islam.

The story revolves around a father and son who live on a remote hill in Remakri. Their TV breaks down right before a big football match. The son (Shariful) is a huge Lionel Messi fan and is fervently waiting to watch his hero play. He and his father (Fazlur Rahman Babu) wade through rough terrain to fix the TV before the impending game.

The writer/director told Dhaka Tribune he felt inspired to tell this story after he became a father about three years ago.

“I wanted to tell a father-son story. Becoming a father helped me see my relationship with my father in a new light,” Maksud said. “I realized every father is a hero in the eyes of his son. In this story, Messi might apparently seem like Shariful’s hero, but the real hero in the end is his father.”

Born in Abu Dhabi, Maksud first became obsessed with films at the age of 11 when he saw Oliver Stone’s “JFK.” He was later greatly influenced by Italian directors like Rossellini, Fellini, De Sica, and so on. He studied film, as a minor, doing his undergrad in business, in the USA. He also attended the highly prestigious and competitive Sundance Screenwriting Lab back in 2008.

Maksud hopes to screen the film in Bangladesh after completing the festival run.
