“Sultana in the city” is a web series starring Zeyran Mehrnush Juhie and directed by Nazia Nusrat Adnin with a concept and script by Kashfy Ahsan Brishty. The trailer for the series was released on the official YouTube channel of Celluloid Studio on September 6.
The five-episode web series is loosely based on “Sultana's Dream” by Begum Rokeya. The audience will be taken through a day in the life of Sultana, a working woman residing in Dhaka.
However, there is a twist: “Sultana often finds herself lost somewhere else. An ELSE LAND, alienated from her very familiar Dhaka city. Is it an unconscious infirmity of her? Or a superpower that she has?—Celluloid Studio team muses in the description box of the trailer.
Script writer Kashfy Ahsan Brishty said she wanted to work on her own projects independently so she could have more creative control.
“Even though it is a lot of trouble, as I have to deal with and manage a lot more things, it’s worth the creative freedom that I get.”
Kashfy had the script for a year before she found someone suitable as her director. Nazia and Kashfy were previously acquainted, but this is the first project they are working on together.
Nazia, director of “Sultana in the city,” said: “I have a great creative understanding with Kashfy. Being a woman in the industry comes with its own challenges, but working with Kashfy was a lot of fun.”
The first episode is set to be released on September 29. The entire show will be available on YouTube. According to the studio’s plans, two episodes will be released per week.
