Actor Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed on Monday was denied bail again by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court in a case filed under the ICT Act.
However, she was given permission to seek medical treatment.
After facing interrogation for six days in police custody in two phases, Nawshaba was brought to the court around 2:40pm by police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Inspector Rafiqul Islam, who is also the case investigation officer. After the hearing, the actor was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as she was suffering from dysentery.
Her lawyer Shyamol Kanti Sarker had filed two petitions at the court earlier in the day: one for Nawshaba’s bail and the other seeking medical treatment for her.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur rejected the bail plea, but granted the second petition, said court police’s General Recording Officer Sub-Inspector Shawkat Akbar.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had detained Nawshaba from the capital’s Uttara on August 4, for spreading rumours on Facebook during clashes between students and police and reportedly activists of ruling party affiliate organizations at Jigatola.
She had claimed that the two students were killed and the eyes of another were gouged out during the clashes.
However, her claims were not backed by proof; but this created controversy and spread panic among students and on social media.
Later, the actor admitted that she did not witness the incidents and had received the information from a friend.
RAB filed the case against her at Uttara west police station on August 5. The next day she was placed on a four-day remand.
A Dhaka court on Friday granted police two more days to further question Nawshaba.
