Nothing breaks the ice like a ghost story, Bangladeshi filmmaker Nuhash Humayun said at the opening day of the 10th edition of Dhaka Lit Fest on Thursday.
“The fun thing about ghost stories is that it gives you the freedom to create your own tale,” Nuhash added at the screening of his Oscar-nominated short film “Moshari” at AKSB Auditorium of Bangla Academy.
After the screening, the director discussed various topics including his thoughts on the film, the inspiration behind making horror films in Bangladesh and the global success of “Moshari.”
He later said: “Ghost stories can only be presented on the screen according to one's own whims and wishes. Because ghost stories are not real!”
The young director also said that Bangla films have not yet developed their own identity in the world.
He expressed his wish to introduce more horror movies in Bangladesh. However, Nuhash Humayun noted that the role of the audience is also important in this case.
Horror stories heard from parents, grandparents, or even from friends play an integral role in childhood and even after one has grown up, Nuhash Humayun said.
“Moshari” written and directed by Nuhash Humayun is an exploration of climate change in Bangladesh. The short-film centers on the story of two sisters surviving in a doomed world.
