Dhaka Lit Fest, the biggest Bangladeshi event on world literature and culture is all set to open on January 5. This is the first time in three years the festival is taking place at Bangla Academy premises. Aside from numerous discussion sessions, literary performances and other festivities, a handful of films, short-films, web shows and documentaries are going to be premiered at the 10th edition of Dhaka Lit Fest.
Moshari
On the first day of the fest (January 5) emerging director Nuhash Humayun's horror short “Moshari” and other horror short-films will be screened at the AKSB Auditorium of Bangla Academy at 1:30pm. “Moshari” written and directed by Nuhash Humayun is an exploration of climate change in Bangladesh. The short-film centers on the story of two sisters surviving in a doomed world.
Pett Kata Shaw
Nuhash Humayun's web series “Pett Kata Shaw” is a Chorki Originals horror anthology that will be premiered at Dhaka Lit Fest as well. “Pet Kata Shaw” will be screened at V Novera Hall, Bangla Academy on January 5 (Day 1) at 5:15pm. This horror anthology is a collection of popular Bengali ghost stories.
Kathal
Young director Amit Ashraf's “Kathal” is a short comedy film that centers around two kids from slums getting into troublesome situation by stealing a huge jackfruit from a high-end neighborhood. 10th edition of Dhaka Lit Fest will screen the film at V Novera Hall, Bangla Academy on January 6 (Day 2) at 11:15am.
Bangla Surf Girls
“Bangla Surf Girls,” written by Lalita Krishna and directed by Elizabeth D. Costa, is a documentary on young girls joining a local surfing club in Cox's Bazar to achieve freedom and escape drudgery and abuse. The documentary will be screened during the fest at V Novera Hall on January 6 (Day 2) at 12:30pm.
Baganiya: Garden of Memories
Written and directed by Humaira Bilkis, the short-film “Baganiya: Garden of Memories” revolves around the life of the tea workers in Bangladesh. The story of the short is a reflection of the stagnation of the Bangladeshi tea community. This film will be featured at 3:00pm on the second day of the fest (January 6) at V Novera Hall.
Statement after my poet husband's death
“Statement after my poet husband's death” is the debut short-film by young Bangladeshi director Tasmiah Afrin. The short is about the psychological journey of a woman sitting beside the dead body of her husband, for whom her feeling is long gone. The short-film will be screened at 4:15 pm on the second day (January 6) of the Dhaka Lit Fest at V Novera Hall.
Heroine's One Night
“Heroine's One Night” is another short-film by the young director Tasmiah Afrin that will be screened at the fest at 4:15pm on January 6 (Day 2) at the Cosmic Tent. The short-film depicts how an actress finds herself morphed into a doll that the film industry wants her to be.
The Final Frontier
Adriaan Snyman produced “The Final Frontier” portrays the fascination of mankind with space. Highlighting the desire to develop necessary technology to unravel cosmic mystery, the film is an exploration and discovery of other planets. “The Final Frontier” will be screened during the fest at V Novera Hall on January 6 (Day 2) at 11:15am.
Orlando
Eminent director Sally Potter's film “Orlando” is based on a novel with the same title by English author Virgina Woolf. “Orlando” centers on the character of a young nobleman named Orlando, who does not age at all. The film follows him as he moves through several centuries of British history. “Orlando” will be screened during the fest at the AKSB Auditorium on the second day (January 6) at 5:30pm.
Dear Satyajit
“Dear Satyajit” is a tribute film written and directed by Proshoon Rahman. The film is based on the inner world of film making, where two directors share their insights on different aspect of filmmaking on their visit to legendary writer-director Satyajit Ray's ancestral home. “Dear Satyajit” will be screened at V Novera Hall, Bangla Academy on January 6 (Day 2) at 5:30pm.
Rickshaw Girl
Renowned Bangladeshi filmmaker Amitabh Raza Chowdhury's film “Rickshaw Girl” tells the tale of a daring Bangladeshi teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy to drive her father's rickshaw for much needed extra money. The story is based on an acclaimed novel by Mitali Perkins. The film is scheduled to screen at 7:00pm on the third day of the fest (January 7) at the AKSB Auditorium.
