Tax return deadline to be extended up to December 31

Update : 28 Nov 2013, 08:20 PM

The National Board of Revenue will extend the deadline for submitting income tax returns again – this time up to December 31 – as response from the taxpayers has been very poor because of the ongoing political unrest.

The revenue authority received only around 600,000 returns as of last week, which shocked its officials.

“People were unable to file their returns because of frequent shutdowns and economic slowdown,” said NBR official.

NBR Chairman Ghulam Hussain received the approval of the extension from Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday evening.

NBR Senior Information Officer Syed A Momen told the Dhaka Tribune that the formal declaration of the fourth deadline would be made on December 1.

The original deadline was September 30. It was extended twice. There are 1.7 million valid TIN holders in the country, and around 1.3 million taxpayers submitted returns for the last fiscal year.
