Govt-WB Project to generate 30,000 jobs in IT sector

Update : 21 Jul 2013, 04:24 PM
The government with support from the World Bank is implementing the Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance Project, to create an estimated 30,000 direct jobs in the IT and ITES sectors.   The project has the potential to create up to 120,000 indirect jobs. It is expected that the IT and ITES industry revenue will increase by over 200m US dollars by the end of the initiative, a WB press release said on Sunday.    According to the studies, Bangladesh possesses significant comparative advantage in the IT and ITES industry due to the availability of a large English-educated talent pool and competitive labour costs. In addition, the industry possesses particular strengths in niche sub-segments like software programming, graphics and animation.    The project will also establish basic e-Government foundations, to support governance reforms and significantly improve the Government’s efficiency and effectiveness. Specifically, the proposed technology foundation will enable all ministries and agencies to host their systems and information on a shared data centre; exchange information and collaborate using standardised frameworks; and protect data through information security policies and standards.    Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) is now witnessing progress towards setting up of the Project Coordination Unit (PCU) with the initial activities of the leveraging ICT project. It is expected that the project will move ahead with procurement activities of the priority components within the next quarter, the press release added.
