Bangladesh's GDP grew 7.1% in FY22

Per capita income misses projected figure

Update : 06 Feb 2023, 04:32 PM

Bangladesh logged higher growth in its gross domestic product (GDP) in FY22, compared to the previous fiscal, but it was still 15 basis points below the provisional estimate.

The economy grew by 7.1 % in FY22, up from 6.94% the previous year.

However, the provisional GDP growth rate figure was 7.25% for FY22, according to data released by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The GDP size also increased to $470.22 billion in FY22, which was $416.26 billion the previous year.

Similarly, the state-owned agency revised downwards the per capita GDP of the country to $2,687 from $2,824.

Meanwhile, per capita income stood at $2,793 in FY22 -- $31 lower than the initial estimate as steep depreciation of the Taka jeopardized government estimates.

However, the per capita income for the year is an increase of 7.8% from a year earlier, according to the BBS.

Similarly, the per capita gross domestic product -- a measure of the value of all final goods and services produced in a certain period -- was lower than the provisional estimate of $2,723.

The per capita GDP last fiscal year was $2,687, up 9.1% year-on-year.

The continuous depreciation of taka against the dollar might have deflated the estimates.

But the final figures were lower than the provisional estimates under almost all overheads.

GDP growth was 15 percentage points lower at 7.1%.

The estimated growth in the industrial sector was projected to be 10.44% but it fell short to 9.85%.

Manufacturing grew 11.41% against the estimate of 12.31% and services rose by 6.26%, lower than the estimated 6.31%.
