Muhith: Tk13,337cr legalised since independence

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has said a total of Tk13,337 crore have so far been legalised since independence. The government has given people the opportunity to legalise their undisclosed money (black money) and the latter cashed in on the situation. Muhith told this in reply to a question of lawmaker M Abdul Latif in the Parliament on Thursday. The finance minister said the government received a revenue of Tk1,454 crore against the given opportunity. He added that the first Awami League government had whitened black money worth Tk2.25 crore during 1972-75 while only Tk50.76 lakh in 1976-81 during Ziaur Rahman’s army regime,  Tk45.89 crore in 1982-90 during HM Ershad’s reign, Tk150.79 crore in 1991-96 during then BNP government and Tk950.41 crore in 1997-2000 during the Awami League government. The four-party alliance government had whitened Tk827.74 crore  during 2001-06, while in 2007-08 during the military-backed caretaker government, Tk9682.99 crore were whitened. In 2009-13, during grand alliance government, Tk1,805 crore have been whitened, and Tk856.30 crore from 2014 till now.
