Budget FY21: Second highest allocation proposed for transport, communications

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal placed Tk5,68,000 crore budget outlay for the 2020-21 fiscal year in the parliament on Thursday

The finance minister proposed the second highest allocation of the budget for FY2020-21 for the transport and communication sector. Including the operational cost – Tk10,342crore – the sector has been tipped to be allocated Tk64,580crore.

The government has finalized a Tk2,15,043crore for the annual development program (ADP), giving utmost priority to the transport and communication sector (Tk54,238 crore, without operations). 

So far, this is the second highest allocation in the budget for 2020-21 fiscal year, while education and technology has been set to get Tk85,762, marked as the highest.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal placed Tk5,68,000 crore budget outlay for the 2020-21 fiscal year in the parliament on Thursday.

Proposed budget shows that the government allocated 25.2% of the development budget for the transport and communication sector, whereas education and technology to get 19.4% and local government and rural development suggested 12.4%. 

According to the proposed budget including the operational cost, the Road Transport and Highways Division has been scheduled get Tk29,421crore, Ministry of Railways proposed to get Tk16,326 crore, Ministry of Shipping to get Tk3,999 crore, and Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism to get Tk3,688crore, Bridge Division to get Tk7,974crore and the Post and Telecommunication Division to get Tk3,146crore.

In the revised budget of the current fiscal year, the sector was allocated Tk58,487crore.
