She will handle the daily correspondence and forward it to the relevant departments until a new governor is appointed

Update : 11 Aug 2024, 06:13 PM

According to an official order by the Financial Institutions Division, Bangladesh Bank (BB) Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar will carry out the duty in the absence of a governor.

The order was issued on Sunday and signed by Afsana Bilkis, deputy secretary, Financial Institutions Division.

According to the order, Bangladesh Bank's deputy governor will assume the responsibilities of their respective departments on a daily basis until a new governor is appointed.

At the same time, Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar will handle the governor's daily correspondence and forward it to the relevant departments.

Abdur Rouf Talukder resigned from the post of Bangladesh Bank governor on Friday (August 9), citing personal reasons.

Talukder's resignation follows a long line of officials from government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions who resigned in the wake of the ouster of the Awami League-led government earlier this week.

On Wednesday, a group of bank officials from Bangladesh demanded the governor of the central bank, four deputy governors, advisors, and the chief of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit resign from their positions, since they were allegedly complicit in the looting of the country’s financial reserves.

Among them, only Deputy Governor Kazi Sayedur Rahman submitted a signed letter to executive director-1 of the central bank while the other assured they would resign soon.

According to senior officials, this is the first time the central bank has experienced something like this.
