Bangladesh Bank (BB) will release new currency notes of around Tk25,000 crore in the market before Eid-ul-Azha.

New currency notes add a new dimension to the festivities, according to central bank officials.

However, they held out the assurance that the release of the new bank notes would not result in increased money circulation and would not impact inflation.

The denominations of the new currency notes will include Tk10, Tk20, Tk50, Tk100, Tk200, Tk 500 and Tk1,000.

This year Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated in the country on July 31 or August 1.

On Eid-ul-Fitr, the circulation of new currency notes was lower than Bangladesh Bank's projection of around Tk30,000 crore mainly as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The currency notes are disbursed to different bank branches designated by the central bank as well as among selective branches of the BB, the officials said.

Unlike previous years, the central bank will not release new currency notes from its Motijheel branch.

Meanwhile, a BB press release on Monday said that the central bank had issued new Tk1,000 notes containing new security features.

However, the design and colour of the new currency note was kept unchanged.
