Experts have stressed the need for banks' financing agro-based new products to diversify the country’s export items.

The suggestion came at a seminar on “Impact of Bank Based Rural and Urban Financing on Economic Growth of Bangladesh” at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) auditorium on Wednesday.

Chairman of the BIBM Executive Committee and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank SM Moniruzzaman attended the seminar as the chief guest while former professor of Dhaka University Barkat-e-Khuda, Supernumerary Professor of BIBM and former Managing Director of Pubali Bank Limited Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, Managing Director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank M Ali Hossain Prodhania and Professor of Dhaka University Dr Mahfuzul Hoque spoke, among others, at the event.

Associate Professor of BIBM Mohammed Sohail Mustafa presented a paper titled “Impact of Bank Based Rural and Urban Financing on Economic Growth of Bangladesh” at the seminar.

SM Moniruzzaman said distribution of credit in different private sectors had also significant impact on the economic growth.

He said the gross domestic product (GDP) was related to the country’s economic activity and the country’s gross domestic product was an indicator that revealed the country’s economic situation and its trends.

In scientific literature there were plenty of studies that analyzed the relationship between lending and economic activities, he added.

BIBM Professor and Director (Training) Shah M Ahsan Habib delivered the welcome address while Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank and Director General of BIBM M Nazimuddin chaired the program.

Barkat-e-Khuda said: “We need to work together for getting expected results for our financial sector.”

He hoped that the outcome of this seminar would be very helpful for all concerned.
