New entrepreneurs to get Tk23,500cr loans in 2017

Bangladesh’s banks and financial institutions are going to disburse Tk23,500 crore loan to create new entrepreneurs to promote sustainable development of the country, officials said. The figure is 20% higher than that of the previous year. The loans will be given to small and medium enterprises in rural areas. Bangladesh Bank has made it compulsory for banks and financial institutions to disburse SME and agricultural credit at low interest rates. Bangladesh Bank officials said the banks and financial institutions have already sent their targets to Bangladesh Bank. The targets are mandatory to be achieved by the banks and financial institutions. According to the central bank data, the banks and financial institutions have fixed target of SME loans at Tk1,33,853 crore this year. The figure is 18% higher than that of previous year. In 2016, the banks and financial institutions fixed the target of SME loan at Tk1,13,503 crore. But they were able to achieve larger than the target, Tk1,41,935 crore. This year the new entrepreneurs will get Tk21,794 crore as SME loans. Last year the amount was Tk18,128 crore. New women entrepreneurs are going to get Tk1,657 crore in SME sector. The state-run banks have decided to disburse Tk15,508 crore this year, which is 15.5% more that the last year. Foreign banks operating in Bangladesh will disburse Tk1,306 crore SME laons, which is 35% lower than the last year. A total of Tk 23,328 crore SME loans became default last year. The total disbursement was Tk1,72,638 crore in the year. Under the new SME loan target, the major portion of the loan,  Tk71,694 crore, will go to business entrepreneurs. The second highest amount of loan, Tk42,000 crore, will go to industrial entrepreneurs and the service sector will get Tk20,255 crore.
