Even after heist revelation, burglars thriving inside Bangladesh Bank HQ

Update : 16 Dec 2016, 07:08 PM
Journalists these days require special permission to enter the headquarters of Bangladesh Bank (BB) in Motijheel, Dhaka's commercial hub, but people with questionable morals and motives are apparently still moving freely around the high security areas of the building without proper authorisation. A probe into the highly publicised $81m cyber heist reveals that a number of foreigners, identifying themselves as SWIFT staff, on multiple occasions took advantage of the lack of security when checking in to the central bank headquarters, engaging themselves in crimes ranging from stealing secured cyber credentials and doctoring the online security system.

Unconfirmed reports this week suggested that two Iranian nationals were caught red-handed at a BB cash counter this week while attempting to steal money from a Bangladeshi. CCTV footage showed the Iranians stealing Tk1 lakh from a female customer. The duo was later handed over to Motijheel police.Infographic_BB heistA few weeks before, a State Bank of India staff member was detained inside the premises for stealing Tk5 lakh from the vault. Terming the incidents as “miniscule and random,” BB spokesperson Subhankar Saha said if the burglars were able to make their way out of the building without being detected, then he would have considered the security system in place to be "weak.”

Former BB governor Dr Salahuddin Ahmed, however, was rather alarmed about the incidents. “No one should be allowed to enter the central bank without prior permission from the officials concerned,” he told the Bangla Tribune. A Bangladesh Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe report says a person called Nilavannan, posing as a SWIFT representative, stole the credentials required to make the international transaction from the Motijheel building’s secured area in November last year. The CID report also points fingers at 23 foreigners involved in the heist. In March this year, then central bank governor Atiur Rahman had to resign in the wake of the cyber heist, the largest in global banking history.
