The Bangladesh government has taken a major step toward its "Cashless Bangladesh" vision by mandating Bangla QR payment integration for all retail businesses and merchants applying for or renewing a trade licence.
Issued by the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives, the directive makes displaying a unified, interoperable QR code a prerequisite for trade licencing across municipal and local authorities.
Designed to eliminate fragmented digital payment setups, the standardized Bangla QR system connects customers and merchants across all major banks, mobile financial services (MFS) like bKash and Nagad, and digital payment providers through a single code.
Under the new workflow, obtaining or renewing a trade license automatically enrolls merchants in the Bangla QR network.
This integration streamlines onboarding, lowers technical barriers for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and accelerates nationwide adoption of digital transactions.
By transitioning away from paper money, the government expects to save an estimated Tk10,000 crore annually in physical currency printing, handling, and maintenance costs.
While local authorities like city corporations are coordinating with central administrations to implement field enforcement, the unified system is set to bring millions of small businesses into the formal, digital economic framework.
