The price of gold jewellery has increased again in Bangladesh, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus) raising the price of 22-carat gold by Tk1,633 per bhori.
Under the new rates, a bhori (11.664 grams) of 22-carat gold jewellery will cost Tk236,779, including VAT.
The price adjustment was made in response to an increase in the price of pure gold in the local market. The new rates came into effect at 10am on Thursday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Bajus Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring. The new rates were announced in a notification signed by committee Chairman Dr Dewan Aminul Islam Shaheen.
According to the new rates, 22-carat hallmarked gold costs Tk20,300 per gram, while 21-carat gold is priced at Tk19,390 per gram and 18-carat gold at Tk16,650 per gram. Traditional gold is priced at Tk13,600 per gram.
Silver jewellery prices also rise
Bajus has also revised the prices of silver jewellery.
Under the new rates, 22-carat hallmarked silver costs Tk435 per gram, 21-carat Tk415 and 18-carat Tk360. Traditional silver is priced at Tk270 per gram.
Bajus said labour charges will be added based on the design and type of jewellery. However, as VAT is included in the announced selling prices, it cannot be charged separately from customers.
The association also said its existing rules on the exchange and sale of old gold and silver jewellery will remain in effect, excluding applicable VAT, labour and stone charges.
The new prices will remain effective at jewellery shops across the country until further notice.
Bajus has revised gold prices several times in recent months amid fluctuations in international and local markets. The repeated price hikes have put gold increasingly out of reach for ordinary buyers, particularly those purchasing it for weddings, social occasions or as a form of savings.
