The proposed budget for fiscal year 2026–27 has allocated Tk 42,497 crore for the defense sector, up from Tk 40,661 crore in FY25–26, reflecting an increase of Tk 1,836 crore year-on-year.
A review of allocations over the past four fiscal years shows a steady rise in defense spending. The allocation stood at Tk 38,174 crore in FY23–24, increased to Tk 39,415 crore in FY24–25, rose further to Tk 40,661 crore in FY25–26, and has now been proposed at Tk 42,497 crore for FY26–27.
According to budget documents, the funds will be used for armed forces deployment activities, including wartime preparedness, participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions, disaster response, and support to civil administration during national emergencies.
The allocation will also cover planning, control and coordination of training and operational activities at home and abroad, as well as promotion and appointment-related functions for officers of the rank of colonel or equivalent and above in the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force.
In addition, the budget provides for coordination of troop deployment to UN peacekeeping missions, implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, construction of Armed Forces Division infrastructure, and planning and execution of joint intelligence activities.
The budget noted that the continued increase in defense allocation comes amid changing regional and global security conditions, Bangladesh’s active participation in UN peacekeeping operations, and ongoing modernization program of the armed forces.
