The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the 2025-26 financial year by another month at the last minute.
As a result, individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) will be able to file their income tax returns by January 31, 2026, without any penalty.
The NBR issued a notification on Sunday (December 28).
Earlier, the deadline for filing returns was extended once for the current financial year.
Although according to the general rules, it is mandatory to file income tax returns by November 30 every year, in reality, the NBR extends the deadline multiple times almost every year.
According to NBR sources, there are currently more than 15 million tax identification number (TIN) holders in the country. Filing a return is mandatory for every TIN holder if they have taxable income.
In the current FY26, with some exceptions, all taxpayers will have to file their income tax returns (e-returns) online.
For this, they will first have to complete registration on the designated website. After registration, the return can be easily filed by logging in with the username and password.
There is no need to upload any documents to submit the return online. The information of the required documents will only have to be provided online.
However, the NBR has advised to save the relevant documents for presentation in case these documents are requested for audit or other needs in the future.
Taxpayers will be able to pay taxes from home while filing e-returns.
In addition to bank transfers, debit cards, credit cards and various mobile financial services including bKash, Rocket, and Nagad can be used to pay taxes.
NBR officials hope that the extension of time will make more taxpayers interested in voluntarily filing returns and will have a positive impact on expanding the tax net.
