In the first four months (July-October) of the current FY26, the total revenue collection of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) stood at Tk119,478 crore. Compared to the same period last year, the growth was 15.54%.
Although the growth is satisfactory, the NBR is lagging behind the target.
The target of revenue collection within the stipulated time was Tk136,697 crore. Accordingly, the deficit stands at about Tk17,200 crore.
The NBR's statistics department said that in the current four months, Tk34,751 crore was collected from import-export duties, Tk46,878 crore was collected from local VAT, and Tk37,849 crore was collected from income tax and travel tax.
Although growth was seen in all three main sectors, the target was not met in any sector. Of these, the highest growth was in VAT—24.78%.
The growth in the income tax sector was 16.11% and in customs 4.53%.
On the other hand, revenue collection in October alone was Tk28,473 crore, which is 2.22% more than the same month of the previous year.
However, this month, there was a negative growth in the customs sector of 16.09%. On the contrary, VAT grew by 10.76% and income tax by 9.98%.
In the current fiscal year's budget, the total revenue collection target has been set at Tk564,000 crore, which is 9% of GDP.
Of this, the collection target through the NBR is Tk499,000 crore and the remaining Tk65,000 crore is to be collected from other sources.
Those concerned believe that the pressure on the NBR to achieve the revenue target is still increasing.
