Driving through a flooded area can be a nerve-wracking experience, but once you've safely navigated through the water it's essential to inspect your car thoroughly to ensure that no damage has occurred due to the encounter with water. Inspect the engine bay for signs of water intrusion. Look for water lines or mud, which could indicate how deep the water was. If you find signs of water, do not attempt to start the engine.
While you’re at it, make sure to check the oil dipstick for any milky or frothy residue, as this may indicate water contamination. Also, inspect the transmission and differential fluids. If any appear discoloured or contaminated, it's essential to drain and replace them.
One of the most troublesome repairs has to be the damage to the wiring. Test all electrical components, including lights, turn signals, and power windows, to ensure they are functioning correctly. Water damage can cause electrical problems that may not be immediately evident.
Even if you have reached the destination safely, I strongly advise you to test the brakes before heading out again. Ensure they're responsive, as wet brakes may not work effectively at first but should improve as they dry out.
