Government reforms RMG central fund board

The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) issued a gazette notification

The government on Tuesday reconstituted the governing board of the central fund for the country's export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) industry, comprising representatives from the government, owners and workers.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) issued a gazette notification in this regard.

The 16-member board would be led by the state minister for labour and employment as the chairman, while the labour secretary, presidents of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), and president of Jatiya Sramik League Nur Kutub Alam Mannan would be its four vice chairman, according to the gazette.

The rest 11 members are: the inspector general of Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), director generals of Department of Labour and Central Fund, two BGMEA vice presidents - SM Mannan Kochi and Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, executive president of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem, and secretary general and chief executive officer of Bangladesh Employers Federation Farooq Ahmed.

From the workers' side, Sirajul Islam Rony, president of Bangladesh Garment Sramik Karmachari League, Syeda Khairun Nahar Tamrin, joint general secretary of Mohila Sramik League Central Committee, Kawsar Ahmed Polash, president of United Federation of Garments Workers, and Sultan Ahmed, president of Bangladesh National Labour Federation, would be the board members.

The government formed the central fund for the RMG industry, and the exporters concerned had been contributing 0.03% of their freight on board prices to the fund from July 1, 2016.
