BB rebukes banks for using CSR funds for other purposes

'We should use the fund for the benefit of the society'

Bangladesh Bank (BB) governor Abdur Rouf Talukder on Saturday criticized banks for using corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for purposes other than their actual objectives.

The governor said such practices should be avoided. "We should use the fund for the benefit of the society," he said.

He also said the central bank had its own CSR fund.

"When I joined the central bank I found it. Actually BB is not doing business, so it should not have such a fund," Talukder said.

The BB governor was addressing as the chief guest at the 21st Nurul Matin memorial lecture on ethics in banking.

The program was held at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) in the city.

BIBM Director General Md. Akhtaruzzaman and Ashraf Al Mamun, associate professor and director (research, development and consultancy) of BIBM also spoke on the occasion.

Former governors, deputy governors, senior central bankers, government high officials, BIBM's chair and supernumerary professors, top executives from different banks and financial institutions, university professors, academicians, faculty members of BIBM, media representatives attended the program.
