The conglomerate Noman Group, which operates in the apparel industry, sued Daily Inqilab Editor AMM Bahauddin and Reporter Sayeed Ahmed for defamation in a story titled "Reener Namey Hatiyechhe Tk10,000 crore" (roughly translated as "Tk10,000 crore embezzled in the name of loan") and sought Tk2,000 crore for the harm caused.
On November 23, the matter was brought before Judge Shafi Uddin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
On behalf of the Noman Group, Supreme Court attorney Barrister Enayet Baten filed the complaint with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday, and told media that: "Noman Group filed a defamation lawsuit under section 500 of the Penal Code, claiming that the story reported by Daily Inqilab is false and contrived."
"The news that was released on October 31 has resulted in irreparable damage to the conglomerate that exports worth $1.2 billion every year."
"Due to false reports, the Noman Group has received negative press both domestically and abroad and has been the subject of several inquiries from its 903 foreign customers. In fact, a lot of customers have ceased placing new purchases with the organization," Barrister Baten added.
