Over the years, the Toyota Crown has been a favourite among all car enthusiasts and has developed a cult following all around the globe.
Crown is the flagship model of the Japanese automaker in terms of regular production and sales. Moreover, it is also the longest-running model of Toyota– starting its production in 1955.
The model is mostly famous for its luxury, and comfort, with a mix of great driving dynamics and reliability, which comes with the brand itself.
The subtle exterior design of most models of Crown acts as a great way to “mix in” with most other cars on the road but the ride and driving traits primarily make it stand out from the rest.
The history and heritage of Crown is something that most owners want to associate it with, that they are part of a historical model of such a renowned brand.
Five years ago, Mustavi Irtiza Bashar and Shaker Ibne Amin co-founded the Crown Club, a renowned club with more than 60 active Crown owners and a total of 1600 members. Their Facebook handle goes by the name: Toyota Crown Owners and Enthusiasts Club, Bangladesh.
The duo first met at a car meet and with the only two Crowns there, they bonded very well and decided on starting a club on their own with close friends and acquaintances who share the same passion for the famous model.
“We often organize meet-ups and try to create something unique every time. The last meet was during Ramadan which was initially a Seheri-planned meet. After gathering at Aarong Tejgaon, an impromptu decision was made there to go for a Mawa run.
Although it was an odd time and a sudden plan, there were still around 10 to 12 cars in that run, and most of them were able to drive in joy and comfort,” said Mustavi about one of his favourite moments with the club.

Answering their plans with it, both the founders hope to arrange more regular events and meet with the members. Also, to create a friendlier and more approachable environment within the group, so that members can feel at home while they are in an event with other Crown owners.
“We wish to have more Crown owners in our club who share the same passion as other members.”
“To say that all Crown models are my favourite will be a cliché, but there are a few which stand out. The 13th generation, S200 model, which is probably the rarest model of modern Crowns in Bangladesh and is a favourite of mine,” he added.
The exterior of the S200 is not the most attractive, but the driving dynamics seem to be in a different league. The comfort of the suspension and seats, handling, and most importantly the 2.5-litre V6 is a great engine with smooth acceleration and good torque. The combination of these traits makes the model great for driving.
In addition, throughout the years, different generations of Crowns have seen slight changes in driving experiences and general comfort. For example, S170 and previous generations were great for comfort, as seats were soft and the suspension was softer, therefore cars were a bit wobbly.
From S180 (12th generation) onwards, the cars were a bit more driver-oriented. Not that the ride was compromised, but owners wanted to drive their cars as well.
The Athlete versions have stiffer suspensions for better handling, and also included sports bucket seats in both S180 and S200 generations.
From S210 onwards, Toyota was able to put a better balance to both driving and rear passenger comfort.
Most enthusiasts suggest that the main essence of Crown is lost in this generation, as the focus on the fuel economy resulted in a few sacrifices in drivetrains.
Also, the previous generation Crowns felt rawer in terms of driving dynamics, and a more comfortable riding experience.
Another model which is probably pretty common in Bangladesh is the 14th generation S210 model and as a daily, the 2.5-litre hybrid setup on the Royal Saloon grade is almost a perfect match.
One of the major drawbacks in driving pleasure is the CVT transmission, and even though it is not the best gearbox, it is ideal for fuel economy.
The interior amenities in the Royal Saloon are good features for the driver, as well as the passenger. The Athlete version of the S210 also comes with a 240hp turbo engine which is perfect for self-driving and sporty looks.
The latest model of the Crown, the 15th generation S220, was not among the favourites for most enthusiasts when it first came out. But, eventually, after seeing it up front, people started to admire it.
The G-executive grade of this model is probably the most luxurious model in the modern Crown range (minus the Crown Majesta). It uses a similar hybrid powertrain from the previous generation, but the output is a bit smoother than before.
“I was lucky to feature this rare grade on my YouTube channel, ‘Cars & Conversation’, and it was bliss to ride and talk about this beautiful model. Another model worth mentioning is the S170 Crown Athlete V, which equips a 1jz-gte inline-six turbo. My fellow co-founder, Shaker Ibne Amin, has a factory Athlete V, which is also featured on my channel. Personally, I drive an S170 as well but the stock version. It is a 2003 model Royal saloon with a regular 2.0-litre engine,” Muustavi said.
Speaking to the founders, they said they solely wanted to create a platform for fellow Crown owners and enthusiasts where members can share their cars, as well as discuss any related topics.
“The group helped ignite a passion for Crowns and we have seen growth in the group itself, with many people realizing the capability and value of Toyota Crown.”
Automotive clubs like this help enthusiasts feel more at home and appreciate their cars as well.
It also gives them an opportunity to share their passion. Also, it helps to appreciate their cars as well and learn more from each other.
