The Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) on Sunday launched its own over-the-top (OTT) calling and messaging app Alaap, which has already gained over 400,000 signups in less than two weeks.

The services of Alaap began on March 26 and over 400,000 people had signed up on the app until April 7, reads a press release.

With the app, users can make calls to any mobile or landline number at 30 paisa per minute with a one-second pulse. The rate will be subject to 15% value-added tax (VAT).

Once the app is installed, a user will own a new Alaap number along with their current mobile number. Users can call or chat with another Alaap user free of cost using the internet.

The app is available on Google Play Store and App Store.

Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar launched the app virtually on Sunday.

Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications Md Afzal Hossain presided over the event while Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder attended as the special guest.

BTCL Managing Director Dr Md Rafiqul Matin also spoke at the launching ceremony.
