The CCCI President also requested the government to take necessary steps to release the items from the port on a priority basis

Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) yesterday sought duty exemption on import of medical equipment, medicines, PPEs and other accessories essential for novel coronavirus (Covid-19) treatment.

The CCCI President Mahbubul Alam made the urge in a letter to the Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday.

The CCCI President also requested the government to take necessary steps to release the items from the port on a priority basis.

“Around 1.50 lakh people have already been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the country. The number of confirmed cases may rise alarmingly in the days to come. Adequate tests cannot be done due to the testing kit crisis. Besides, many Covid-19 patients are dying due to the shortage of ventilator,” Alam said.

“Many medical equipment like high flow nasal cannula, ventilator, cardiac monitor, oxygen cylinder, Coronavirus testing kit, single-use PPE, N-95/KN-95 facial mask, face shield, goggles, pulse oximeter, oxygen metre and sanitizer are now being imported to halt Covid-19. However, different types of import-level duties are being imposed on the imported items,” said the CCCI President.

“Under the circumstances, the duty waiver on imported items and quick delivery from the port will help save lives of infected people,” he said.
