Bangladesh Supermarket Owners' Association (BSOA) on Thursday said all the supermarkets in the country had sufficient stocks of essential commodities.

"Moreover, we are committed to keeping the goods prices stable even in crisis," said a press release signed by Zakir Hossain, general secretary of the association.

The association makes the call in such a time when the country is experiencing panic purchases of excessive amounts of essential goods fearing price hikes amid coronavirus outbreak.

In Dhaka's market, rice price was found going up by around Tk3-8 a kilogram while several other grocery items up by 5-10%.

The situation is the same in others markets across the country.

The  BSOA urged people not to buy excessive amount of goods or stock them.

"We are assuring you of fair prices and uninterrupted supply of the daily goods," said the general secretary and added that they were conscious about their staff and consumers' health.

Bangladesh has so far confirmed 18 cases of coronavirus infection and first death from coronavirus as of March 19.

Covid-19, a new strain of coronavirus, has killed over 9,115 people around the world.

The fear of the deadly virus forced the government to shutdown all educational institutes for two weeks and limit official works and other activities. It also restricted gathering in tourist spots.
